Karuna Action

“A peaceful home for life’s final journey”

For the Care receiver & Care giver

Albagnano Healing Meditation Centre

Karuna Action is a project of the Albagnano Healing Meditation Centre, offering compassionate care to people facing an incurable illness and a limited life expectancy. Rooted in principles of love and care, it supports individuals and their loved ones through life’s final journey.

About Karuna Action

Karuna Action bridges the gap between home-based palliative care and hospice care. Its focus is on holistic well-being, addressing spiritual, psychological, and social needs. While it does not provide direct medical treatment, it works in close collaboration with medical professionals. Medical care and descisions are provided by local facilities, including family doctor, palliative care team, hospital, and hospice.

Karuna Action emphasizes spiritual, psychological, and social support tailored to the needs of each participant (Karuna Care Receiver, KCR).

When care at home is no longer possible, Karuna Action offers a gentle transition through “home-hospitalization.”

For who?

Care is open to all, regardless of religious, spiritual, or cultural background. Patients and families are welcomed into a peaceful and supportive environment.

Each person’s admission is carefully assessed by the core team, which includes Lama Michel Rinpoche, Elkana Waarsenburg (MD), Bel Cesar (psychologist), and Charlotta Serge, board of Kunpen Lama Gangchen. Individualized care plans are created based on the individual physical, psychological, and spiritual needs.

How?

Each patient’s admission is carefully assessed by the core team, which includes Lama Michel Rinpoche, Drs. Elkana Waarsenburg (MD), Bel Cesar (psychologist), and Charlotta Serge, board of Kunpen Lama Gangchen. Individualized care plans are created based on the patient’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs. Medical decisions are made by the local medical services.

Volunteers, referred to as Karuna Care Givers (KCG), are essential to the initiative. Nowadays there are more then 60 volunteers connected to this project. The KCG undergo a one-year online training program to ensure proficiency in palliative care, covering social, and psychological aspects.

Under the guidance of Lama Michel Rinpoche and the core team, the KCGs provide supplementary care, companionship, and practical assistance, always respecting the medical framework established by healthcare professionals.

Collaboration with the medical doctors and local palliative care services in Verbania, such as Castelli Hospital and Hospice San Rocco, is integral. These partnerships ensure that patients receive the necessary medical interventions while fostering a nurturing environment that prioritizes emotional and spiritual well-being.

Even if a participant’s medical needs surpass the resources of Karuna Action, spiritual support and companionship can continue in other settings like hospital or hospices.

Cost?

Karuna Action operates as a non-profit project, with participants contributing to basic operational costs and donations sustaining future beneficiaries. This initiative exemplifies Lama Gangchen Rinpoche’s vision of Compassion in Action, providing solace and dignity to individuals in their final journey while fostering mutual growth and enrichment for caregivers and receivers alike.
